Total Commander is a file manager for Windows. It copies, moves, and deletes files like Explorer, but also packs and unpacks archives, connects to FTP servers, compares files by content, and synchronizes directories. See the features page for the full list.
In 2002 the product was renamed from Windows Commander to Total Commander. The same developer, Christian Ghisler, continues to maintain it.
No. It is shareware with a 30-day evaluation period. After that the program keeps working but shows registration reminders. A single-user license covers multiple computers as long as only one person uses Total Commander at a time (concurrent use / floating license).
Yes. Since version 1.0, all updates have been free for registered users. Descargar the latest shareware build and install over the old version. Keep the wincmd.key file. This policy has been in place until further notice per the ordering FAQ.
Yes. The 32-bit build runs on Windows 95 through 11 on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The 64-bit build runs on Windows XP 64-bit through Windows 11 64-bit. Version 11.58 was released July 1, 2026.
No native Linux port exists; the Linux version was delayed indefinitely. Total Commander runs on Linux through Wine. On Mac, Ghisler recommends Windows emulators (VMware Fusion, Parallels, Crossover) or alternatives like Commander One, CRAX Commander, DCommander, or Nimble Commander. A freeware Android version is also available.
totalcmd.exe is packed with ASPack, which triggers some heuristics. Slow scanners can also abort and report a false virus. Total Commander checks its own checksum at startup and warns if the file was modified. Ghisler certifies the installer as 100% clean. See guides for fixes.
Ghisler no longer publishes MD5 hashes. Right-click the installer, open Properties, go to Digital Signatures, and confirm the signer is Ghisler Software GmbH. You can also compare the SHA256 hash listed on our download page if your mirror matches the Uptodown build.
Licenses are floating (concurrent use). Count the maximum number of people using Total Commander at the same time, not the number of computers. Ten employees on twenty PCs at once needs a 10-user license. Short occasional overages are acceptable per Ghisler.
Third-party bundles that include Total Commander plus plugins and helper tools. You cannot buy the bundle as a whole from Ghisler. Purchase a normal Total Commander license and use the key with the package. Other shareware in the bundle, such as WinRAR, must be licensed separately from their authors.
Native SSH encryption is not built in due to historical patent and export restrictions. SFTP (FTP over SSH2) is available through a filesystem plugin. Most current Linux and Unix servers support SSH2.
Yes. Select the archive and press Ctrl+PageDown. This works for normal and self-extracting archives. Java .jar files are ZIP archives and open the same way if not associated with another program.
The email newsletter was discontinued. Total Commander 9 and newer can check daily via DNS whether a new version exists. Open Help - Check for updates now and enable automatic checking. Updates are never installed automatically. You can also set AutoUpdateCheck=2 in wincmd.ini under [Configuration].
Yes. The license must be in the student's name. Email a photo of a certificate of study or ID (max 500 KB JPG) to Ghisler support to receive a discount code. Sensitive fields may be covered; name and current year must be visible.
Mainly bugfixes: safer encrypted archive name handling in tabs and history, no default logging of header-encrypted names, WinGet version bump from 11.57a, multi-rename [X+] placeholder, button bar negative icon IDs, and cm_FocusLeft fix. Full timeline on the download page.
