Total Commander is a legitimate file management tool. Use it to organize, copy, move, archive, and transfer files you have the right to access. Do not use it to distribute pirated software, bypass copyright protection, access systems without authorization, or violate FTP server terms.
Shareware licensing requires payment after the evaluation period if you continue using the software in a commercial or personal setting. One license permits one concurrent user across multiple machines they own or control.

Respect file ownership on shared drives and FTP servers. When synchronizing folders, confirm you are not deleting production data on the wrong side. Version 11.58 improved privacy for header-encrypted archives: file names from password-protected archives are no longer written to the log by default, because logging decrypted paths without explicit consent was considered a security boundary violation by users and the developer.
Third-party bundles such as Ultima Prime or Power Pack may include other shareware tools. Each component must be licensed with its respective author. Ghisler does not sell those bundles directly.

Total Commander is proprietary shareware developed by Christian Ghisler since 1995. It is not open source. The core executable, wincmd.ini settings format, and plugin API are documented, and the addon ecosystem includes packer plugins, filesystem plugins (including SFTP), and content plugins written by third parties.

Ghisler certifies Total Commander as 100% clean: no viruses, no adware, no spyware. Mirror sites may show ads, but the installer itself is not bundled with unwanted software when obtained from a verified source.
At every startup, Total Commander runs an internal checksum on totalcmd.exe. If the binary changed, you see a warning before any file operation runs. This protects against tampering even when antivirus definitions lag behind new threats.
Some antivirus products flag the ASPack-compressed executable or scan it so slowly that startup fails. That is a known false positive documented in the official Problems FAQ, not evidence of malware. Verify the installer digital signature as the primary trust check.

You are responsible for backing up data before bulk delete, sync, or move operations. Total Commander's overwrite dialog and logging help audit actions, but it cannot undo mistakes across network drives or FTP servers.
When resuming FTP uploads, Total Commander cannot fully verify that the partial file on the server matches the local remainder. Test the result after resuming uploads, especially on servers that report incorrect file sizes.
